Good Mates
A couple college friends just left after a brief visit to attend the Open. I'm feeling a little sad about it.
Yesterday, we walked up to, through, and back down the West Village, landing at Bubby's for dinner. Their company was grand. Swell, even. Equally great? That at the end of the night, I could squeeze my friends a hug good-bye in front of their hotel instead of taking them home with me to spend the night on my couch or in my tub. Yay for friends who can afford hotels. Tonight, I met up with them again after work. Dinner was even better than all that I've just described, if only because it was the second night in a row that I was in the company of two kind people that have known me now for almost fourteen years. Not many people can say that they've known me for that long and still want to see me.
Sometimes I get a little more debbie downer than I'd like about having such few local friends and so many scattered elsewhere across the country. Still, I am grateful for the good friends I have, both near and far. It will probably always be this way, that distance keeps us apart and out of each other's immediate company save for every six months or even years. But if that's the only option over not seeing them at all, then I'll take it.

Bubby's Tribeca {+}. NYC.
8:00 pm. Yesterday.

I bet two of my best friends in college. I actually just got home last week from taking a vacation with them to celebrate my birthday. There's something special about those kinds of friends.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes fantasize what it would be like if we all lived in the same building again, only instead of dorm rooms, we'd have our own apartments. It would be like one big 24/7 party!
DeleteOh, and how rude of me...happy belated birthday!
DeleteI love catching up with old friends. So how is Bubby's? N and I are trying to see if we can wrangle a trip to the city some time this fall. I'm crossing my fingers--I've never been! If it pans out, I might hit you up for some restaurant recommendations :)
ReplyDeleteBubby's is known for their pies, which I did not try b/c pie is kind of low on my list of all things that are high in butter and sugar and rock my world. We went at my friend's request. The things you do for guests, you know? No, really, if you like bbq and fried chicken and that sort of thing, you'll like Bubby's. Actually, you'll like pretty much all the food in NY. And speaking of NY...Get. Outta. Town. Are you for serious? You're coming HERE? That is fabulous! Autumn in this city is where it's at. I'll happily lend my two cents - please let me know how I can help.
DeleteToo bad we never met when I was living in New York. I was always complaining about not having many friends there! I haven't heard of Bubby's - I'll have to try them the next time I'm down there (for the fried chicken and bbq - I'm not crazy about pie either).
ReplyDeleteAh, well, an opportunity missed, perhaps, but we can always meet another time. :)
DeleteI haven't been eating much meat so I ended up dinner-ing on collard greens, cornbread, and french fries that night, if you can believe it. So lame! I will admit that there are some pies that I'd eat whole in one sitting if I could - pumpkin and apple, in particular. I love me some fall flavors!
