Sheesh

Do you know what it's like to look out your window, see a tree bow with the wind, and not come back up again? My sister and I looked at each other, the window, each other, the window, and back to each other again.  Wasn't there a tree there a moment ago?  When we finally got up to look outside, we saw that the tree trunk had snapped in two; the top half was strewn on the third floor terrace below.

The power has been out since yesterday evening.  I'm now on the Upper East Side at a friend's.  My phone is charging, but instead of taking the hot shower I'm supposed to take, I'm blogging from a nifty little MacBook.  Classic Julia move.

It felt strange this morning to be cut off from everyone - no phone, no e-mail, no tv, no media access whatsoever.  I'm heading back home in a couple hours.  I'll have my phone all juiced up, but it feels weird that if Verizon decides to zing out, I won't have any way of connecting to the outside world again.

I'll leave you with some evidence of Sandy's visit outside our building.

  1. Glad to hear you're safe and hope your power comes back soon.

  2. Yikes! Glad you're safe. I can't even imagine what you're going through on the east coast.

  3. It's more an inconvenience than anything else. And a fun exercise on how to hit up your friends for hot showers and figure out how to walk home in the pitch black darkness. Seriously, you can't see two feet in front of you!

It'll be over soon, I hope. Thanks for all the well wishes :).
